Well, as some of you may recall, I was looking into purchasing a friend’s Saab 9-5 wagon. Talked to her today and she actually isn’t wanting to sell it yet. I have people looking at my truck so I will need to replace it soon. I found a ‘08 Passat wagon 2.0T at a local dealer. Any opinions? if anybody wants to run the VIN for me I wouldn’t be upset about it.

I used to have a MKV VW Golf, but I know almost everything about the MKV/MKVI engine and chassis. The car you’re about to buy has the FSI 2.0T motor which has a large known fault which inevitably causes it to implode. Look up the 2.0T cam follower issue. Essentially the fuel pump sits on the camshaft and the piston of it ‘glides’ over the shaft. Over time the cam follower (which sits between the piston and the cam) wears out and it punctures a hole in the cam shaft causing major $$$$. Take off the HPFP which sits on the motor and look inside at the camshaft and cam follower, see if the cam follower is punctured and if there are any marks on the shaft. That’s the biggest issue but it is preventable with maintenance (just look to see if previous owner has maintained it). This is for all 2.0T motors from VW/Audi from 2006-2009/2010 (A3, GTI, A4, Passat, Jetta)

Thanks for the info. If I go take a look at it I will keep it in mind

Another thought is, it’s listed as an automatic, meaning it’s likely the DSG. Make sure it has DSG service every 40k as it’s standard required maintenance. At 138k, it’s supposed to have had 3 of those services, each one costing about 400 a piece. If they can’t confirm that it’s been done, i’d be cautious.

Thanks! I appreciate the insight.

Since you seem to be quite knowledgeable on this matter, opinions on these?

I work at a Volkswagen Dealer and B6 Passat wagons are so desirable and sought after that we ask service customers that have them if they are willing to trade it in if we give them a good deal on a new or pre-owned VW. They’re reliable, they’re hard to come by in good shape. Just be sure that the 2.0T has had it’s proper services done by mileage increments. That is the key to that particular drivetrains longevity. What's the mileage?

Just saw the listing, Its in killer shape, only thing I am weary of is the service records look good until 90k because at that mark its crucial to see if it’s have any of the necessary preventative maintenance done.

This is the things I, at a Volkswagen dealer would want to see.

Thanks man. I definitely want to take a look at it. I have a connection at the local Audi dealership, might see if I can get them to go over it for me. I am capable of doing the work just not sure how the dealer would feel about me pulling the fuel pump off.

Not as well versed in the old passats, mostly familiar with Mk5 golf/jetta platforms. Mk5 Rabbit is a great little vehicle. Same chassis as the golf and jetta. 5 cylinder with no turbo, 150 hp, 170 tq for 2006 models. It has the older DSG tiptronic which my understanding are not as robust as the later DSGs on the 2008 and up versions i believe. If i was looking at a mk5 rabbit 2006, i’d look for a manual to really ring out everything i can from the engine.

HAHA yea get a PPI done by Audi, they most certainly can do it.

Ok, looking more seriously at the car. It’s not a DSG trans, so thats good. I know you said that the maintenance records looked good till 90K. Any way to tell if the timing chain has been serviced?

In PPI they should be able to tell.

I have an ‘08 Passat Wagon 2.0T 6spd and it’s a joy to drive. We bought it new, now have 110K on it and it’s been a good car. Would recommend.

Depends if it’s the BPY or CCTA 2.0T. The CCTA is the “2.0 TSI” which I’m pretty sure is what this has. It’s what mine has and it’s been a great motor.

Pretty sure its 08.5 or 09+ have the TSI motors, in GTI/GLI/A3/A5 etc..
Unsure about the Passat. But check the engine cover, post a picture here and I will let you know

Curious - I have an ‘08 Passat Wagon 2.0T TSI/CCTA we’ve owned since new. At 110K I’m getting away from dealership service intervals, I don’t think we’ve had a “major” service done since 60K. Other than oil changes (which we do keep up on), what does it need for service? I’m going to do plugs and wires soon, but I don’t see anything else looking needy on this engine. It’s been a rock.

Ours is definitely a TSI/CCTA motor. I don’t have a pic handy but I’ve looked it up before. I’ll have to see what the production date is though. edit - sorry, just for clarity, I’m talking about my own Passat Wagon, not the one in the listing. We bought one new in ‘08 and still have it.

Plugs/wires, Trans flush.

Thanks! Yeah, that’s pretty much my list. Not very long!

With these cars oil change every 10k, DSG every 40k and plugs wires at 100-110K are a must but if the car shows no other signs of needing anything, I'd leave it at that. Some people say do the fuel pump and timing chain and tensioner as preventative but that's up to you. The TSI is the more reliable motor for sure. Replaced the FSI mid '08 MY.

If the pump is fine then honestly skip that, but everything else I'd do! Great motor! great car!

Now I recall - that’s one thing that happened, the high pressure fuel pump quit at 60K, but that’s in-tank (or in line, not on engine). Dealer done, $750 and I felt ripped off. But it was slow and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it quickly, and it’s my wife’s DD, so to the dealer it went. I hated that. Future repairs are in my garage now. It’s a MT, so changing that gear oil at 100K is the intended interval. I had it changed at 7K to get rid of break-in metals...

AH manual! that’s a rare bird!

Yeah, you don’t see many that’s for sure. I told my wife when we were wagon shopping that I wanted it to be a manual - and keep in mind this was for her DD and she didn’t really know how to drive stick... So we bought it, I taught her how to drive it (the right way), and just the other day she told me how much she doesn’t like ATs now... so I’m pretty psyched. It was fun shopping, because there were only a few around and I was emailing all the different local VW dealers who had them in stock. We actually ended up getting the best price and bought it from a dealer who didn’t even have one in stock (and didn’t get it from one of the local dealers we had been negotiating with) so they could make some kind of sales quota. We went there based on a desperate phone call while we were on our way to a different dealership (that had a brown one no less!). I’m pretty sure they made no money directly on our sale based on the pricing I was playing the other dealerships off with. Anyway, it’s a fantastic drive, torquey, quick, great milage and it’s been very reliable overall.

The B6 estates are wonderful cars, like I said.. we always try and get people to trade theirs in. There's a white one that comes through for service, it's a one owner, white on cornsilk beige, DSG.. but the cool part is it has a ground effects kit and they swapped the wheels off a late model Executive EOS so it looks so good. They will not trade for anything.
